À sa disparition en 1992, à l'âge de soixante-douze ans, Isaac Asimov laissait en héritage à la foule de ses admirateurs le compte rendu détaillé d'une existence bien remplie : la présente autobiographie.
L'auteur qui aura sans doute le plus marqué la science-fiction moderne, jusqu'à se confondre pratiquement avec elle, y retrace son enfance de jeune émigré russe à Brooklyn, les innombrables lectures qui devaient faire de lui une encyclopédie vivante, sa carrière orageuse de professeur de biochimie et, bien sûr, son itinéraire d'écrivain.
Un ouvrage indispensable pour comprendre cinquante ans d'évolution d'un genre littéraire dont Asimov, par ses rencontres et son implication, fut un témoin privilégié.

Dans la grande tradition des littératures de l'imaginaire, « Folio SF », laboratoire des possibles, propose des textes de science-fiction, de fantasy et de fantastique. Tantôt très brèves et reposant parfois sur des jeux de mots dont Asimov lui-même a la grâce de rougir, telle celle où un parieur est certain de gagner, tantôt très élaborées, comme celle qui donne son titre au recueil et où un physicien explique à ses collègues qu'il a exploité leurs propres théories afin de remonter dans le temps pour les empêcher d'avoir la promotion qu'il convoite lui-même, ces nouvelles démontrent une fois encore - mais qui en doutait? - l'immense talent de l'auteur de Fondation.
Vingt textes, tour à tour cocasses, surprenants ou édifiants ; vingt occasions de retrouver avec plaisir l'un des plus grands maîtres - sinon le plus grand! - de la science-fiction.
